You can check a Kerala driving licence application status free of charge on the Sarathi Parivahan portal, sarathi.parivahan.gov.in. Open the portal, choose Kerala as the state, click Application Status, and enter your application number, your date of birth and the captcha shown on screen. The result shows the stage your application has reached, from submission and document verification through testing, approval and dispatch of the card. No RTO visit and no fee are needed for the check itself, and you can repeat it as often as you like.
There are two different checks people mix up. The application status tracks a request you have already filed, such as a new licence, a renewal, a duplicate or an added vehicle class, and it works with the application number from your acknowledgement. The licence status check is for a licence that already exists: it confirms whether the licence is active, when it expires and which vehicle classes it covers, and it works with the DL number. This guide covers both.
| Check | Details you need | Where the number is |
|---|---|---|
| Application status | Application number, date of birth, captcha | On the acknowledgement slip and the SMS sent when you applied |
| Existing licence details | DL number, date of birth | Printed on the licence card itself |
Keep the date of birth in the same format you used in the application. Most failed checks are simple mismatches: a wrong digit in the application number, or a date of birth entered in a different order than the form expects. If the portal returns no record, re-enter both values slowly before assuming the application is missing.
The same acknowledgement number tracks every licence service, so the steps above also work after a renewal or a duplicate application. If your renewal is the pending item, our Kerala driving licence renewal fees guide explains the fee and the medical certificate rules that apply from age 40.
If the card is already issued and you only want to confirm that it is active and in date, use the licence details check instead. On parivahan.gov.in, open Online Services and then Driving Licence Related Services, select Kerala, and use the Know Your Driving Licence Details option. Enter the DL number and date of birth and the portal shows the holder name, the issuing office, the vehicle classes covered and the validity dates for non-transport and transport categories. The mParivahan app shows the same record when you search by DL number, and a licence fetched into DigiLocker carries the same validity dates as the card.
Check the validity dates carefully. A licence can be active as a record and still be expired for driving. If the non-transport validity has passed, you need a renewal rather than a status fix, and the DL renewal service page lists what that application involves. If the address on the record is an old one, correct it with the process in our driving licence address change guide before the next card is printed and posted.
| Stage shown | What it means | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Application submitted | The form reached the RTO system | Nothing yet; complete any pending upload or payment stage the list shows |
| Documents under verification | An officer is checking your proofs | Wait; visit the RTO with originals only if the status asks for it |
| Test slot booked or test completed | Your learner or driving test stage is recorded | Keep the acknowledgement; the next stage follows the test result |
| Approved | The licensing authority has approved issue | Wait for printing and dispatch; keep checking the same page |
| Printed and dispatched | The card has left the issuing office by post | Note any dispatch reference shown and allow postal time to your address |
| Rejected or kept pending with a remark | A document or detail failed verification | Read the remark, correct that item, and re-apply or visit the RTO as the remark directs |
The exact wording of stages varies a little between services, but the order does not: submission, verification, test where one applies, approval, printing, dispatch. If your stage has not moved for a long period while later stages normally follow within days, the remark column on the same screen is the first place to look, because pending objections are recorded there rather than sent separately.
Work through the common causes in order. First, a pending fee payment or an incomplete upload leaves the application sitting at an early stage, and the status screen shows that stage as incomplete; finish it from the same dashboard rather than filing a second application. Second, a rejected document shows as a verification remark; correct only the named item. Third, if the card shows dispatched but has not reached you, check that the address on the application is complete and current, and allow for postal delivery time before reporting it undelivered at the RTO. Filing a duplicate while the original is in the post creates two live applications, so confirm the dispatch outcome first; our learner licence service page is the starting point if the stuck item is a first learner application instead.
No. The status check on Sarathi Parivahan is a free information service. You pay only for the licence service itself, such as issue, renewal or a duplicate, and that payment is made inside the application, never on the status page. A site that asks for payment just to show a status is not the official portal.
Not for an application. The application status form needs the application number with your date of birth. If you have lost the acknowledgement, the number was also sent by SMS at the time of application. For an already issued licence, use the DL number check described above instead.
There is no single fixed Kerala timeline published for each stage, so treat the status screen itself as the record. The test result stage is recorded by the RTO after your test, and approval, printing and dispatch follow it. If nothing has changed after a reasonable wait, check the remarks on the status screen and then ask at the RTO where you tested, carrying your acknowledgement.
Fetch the licence into DigiLocker or mParivahan once the record exists and carry that digital copy, which shows the same validity as the card. If no licence record exists yet, the application is still in process and the approval stage alone is not a licence.
Yes. Every Sarathi application, new licence, renewal, duplicate, added class or address change, is tracked with its own application number on the same Application Status page.
Portals and stages change without notice. Verify the current process on parivahan.gov.in and sarathi.parivahan.gov.in before applying, and treat the status shown for your own application number as the final record.
