Yes, you can keep your old registration number and put it on a new vehicle in Kerala, through the Retention of Registration Number service on Vahan, on parivahan.gov.in. Retention is for the same owner and for a new, not yet registered vehicle of the same class: a car number goes to a new car, a motorcycle number to a new motorcycle. Apply before you sell or scrap the old vehicle, because once its registration is transferred or cancelled without retention, the number goes with that record. No separate Kerala retention fee could be verified on the official Parivahan fee schedule for this guide: the total shown on your own Vahan retention application is the final amount.
Retention parks your number with the registering authority so it can be assigned to your new vehicle at registration, instead of a random new number. The old vehicle is given a different number, with a fresh RC and new plates, before it is sold on or scrapped.
| Condition | Position |
|---|---|
| Owner | Same person on the old RC and on the new vehicle invoice |
| Vehicle class | Same class: car to car, motorcycle to motorcycle. A car number cannot be retained onto a motorcycle, and the other way round |
| New vehicle | Brand new and not yet permanently registered. Tell the dealer before registration starts, not after a random number has been allotted |
| Old vehicle | Still registered in your name when you apply. Apply before the sale transfer or the scrapping cancellation is completed |
| Minimum period you must have held the old number | No Kerala period could be verified on an official page. Other states publish their own, for example one year in Gujarat and three years in some other rules, so do not assume either is the Kerala rule: confirm it at your RTO before planning a sale around it |
Keep tax, insurance and PUC current on the old vehicle, and clear pending e-challans where the portal asks. A blocked record will stall retention just as it stalls a transfer.
The central fee schedule on parivahan.gov.in, as last read for this site, carries no separate line that could be verified as a Kerala retention fee. That is why no single retention figure is quoted here.
| Item | Position |
|---|---|
| Separate retention fee on the official fee schedule | No separate Kerala line verified |
| Amount you actually pay for retention | The total shown on your Vahan retention application before payment |
| New vehicle registration and road tax | Payable as normal for the new vehicle, on top of any retention charge. Retention does not replace registration or tax |
| Dealer or agent help, if you use it | A private service charge on top of the government fee, not an RTO fee. Ask for an itemised receipt |
Verification gap: parivahan.gov.in and mvd.kerala.gov.in did not respond at research time in October 2026, so this position is based on the fee schedule as last read for this site and the documented Vahan retention flow in national guides, with the live Vahan payment screen treated as final. Other states slabs, such as Gujarat, do not apply in Kerala.
If you are selling the old vehicle, retention comes first, then the transfer happens with the old vehicle carrying its replacement number. Our guide to RC transfer fees and timelines in Kerala covers that transfer stage. If you are scrapping the old vehicle, get the retention approved before the registration is cancelled against a Certificate of Deposit, because a cancelled record leaves no live number to retain: see our guide to vehicle scrapping in Kerala for the scrapping sequence. No fixed Kerala window for using a retained number could be verified, so treat any window on your approval as binding.
No. The old RC and the new vehicle must be in the same owner name.
No. Retention stays inside the same class: four-wheeler to four-wheeler, two-wheeler to two-wheeler.
Treat that as closed in most cases: once the transfer completes, the number belongs to that record in the buyers name. If your transfer is filed but not yet approved, ask the RTO immediately whether retention can still be taken up.
No separate Kerala fee could be verified, so no single figure is quoted here. The total on your Vahan application is what you pay, plus the new vehicle registration and road tax.
Not if you finish properly: it gets a replacement number, a re-issued RC, and new plates. Never drive it displaying the retained number after that number is assigned to the new vehicle.
Fees and rules change without notice. Verify all fees and rules on parivahan.gov.in before applying, and treat the fee total and the conditions shown on your own Vahan retention application as the final figure.
