Kerala learner's licence test questions with answers
Last updated: September 2026
The Kerala learner's licence test is a computer-based test of 15 multiple-choice questions, and you need at least 9 correct answers to pass. You get 30 seconds per question, you can take the test in Malayalam, and the official fee is Rs.150 for the licence plus Rs.50 for the test per vehicle class. Below: the format, 20 practice questions with answers written the way the test asks them, the Malayalam terms that show up, and what the top search results get wrong.
The test format at a glance
| Detail | Current rule |
|---|
| Number of questions | 15 multiple-choice questions |
| Pass mark | At least 9 correct answers (60%) |
| Time per question | 30 seconds |
| Where | Computer-based, at your RTO in Kerala |
| Languages | Malayalam, English and Hindi; you pick at the start |
| Retake after failing | After 7 days, paying the Rs.50 test fee again |
| Official fee | Rs.150 licence issue + Rs.50 test, per vehicle class |
One website claims the pattern changed in August 2025 to 15 questions with 12 correct answers and a 10-minute limit. I could not verify that claim on parivahan.gov.in, so treat it as unconfirmed: the booking portal itself tells you the current pattern when you schedule the test.
20 practice questions with answers
Real test questions are drawn from a question bank on road signs, traffic rules and basic safety. Road-sign questions usually show an image; memorise the shapes and colours below and the image versions are easy.
Traffic signs (1-10)
- A red circular sign means what? It is a prohibitory sign. You must not do what the symbol shows, for example no entry, no U-turn, or no parking.
- A red-bordered triangular sign means what? It is a cautionary (warning) sign. A hazard lies ahead, such as a school, a sharp bend, or a railway crossing.
- A blue circular sign means what? It is a mandatory sign. You must follow the instruction, such as keep right or turn left.
- An octagonal red sign that says STOP means what? Stop the vehicle completely, then proceed only when the road is clear.
- An inverted triangle sign means what? Give way to traffic on the road you are about to join.
- What is a zebra crossing for? It is a marked pedestrian crossing. Slow down and stop if a pedestrian is waiting to cross; pedestrians have the right of way there.
- What does a broken white centre line mean, and a solid one? A broken line means you may overtake or change lanes if it is safe. A solid (or double solid) line means do not cross it.
- An amber light after green means what? Get ready to stop. Do not enter the junction unless you cannot stop safely.
- A red traffic light means what? Stop and wait behind the stop line until the light turns green.
- A sign showing a red circle over the letter P means what? No parking.
Road rules (11-18)
- On which side do you overtake in India? From the right.
- When is overtaking prohibited? On bends, near pedestrian crossings, on narrow bridges, and in any situation where it could endanger other traffic.
- Which vehicles always get priority? Emergency vehicles: ambulances, fire brigades. Pull to the left and let them pass.
- On a narrow hill road, who gets the way? The vehicle going uphill has priority.
- What is the legal blood alcohol limit for drivers? 30 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood. Driving above that is an offence under the Motor Vehicles Act.
- What is the minimum age for a learner's licence? 16 for a gearless two-wheeler up to 50 cc, 18 for other private vehicles, and 20 for transport vehicles.
- When may you use the horn? Only to alert other road users when needed. Avoid it near hospitals and schools (silent zones) and never use it out of impatience.
- How do you overtake safely? Check mirrors, signal, flash headlights or sound the horn as appropriate, and overtake only when the road ahead is clearly visible and clear.
Documents, safety and the vehicle (19-20)
- What must a learner driver display and who must accompany them? An L plate on the front and rear of the vehicle, and a person holding a valid driving licence sitting alongside.
- Which documents must you carry while driving? Your driving licence, the registration certificate, insurance, and a valid PUC certificate. Digital copies in DigiLocker or the mParivahan app are accepted during traffic checks.
Malayalam terms that show up in the test
If you take the test in Malayalam, these are the standard terms the Kerala MVD uses for the four sign families. Learning them first makes the Malayalam question bank much easier.
| English term | Malayalam |
|---|
| Mandatory signs | നിർദ്ദേശ ചിഹ്നങ്ങൾ |
| Prohibitory signs | നിരോധന ചിഹ്നങ്ങൾ |
| Cautionary (warning) signs | മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് ചിഹ്നങ്ങൾ |
| Informatory signs | വിവര ചിഹ്നങ്ങൾ |
| Learner's licence | ലേണേഴ്സ് ലൈസൻസ് |
| Speed limit | വേഗപരിധി |
| Give way | വഴി കൊടുക്കുക |
What the top results get wrong
Most pages ranking for this query are copies of the same low-quality PDF. Three errors keep repeating: they say the test has "20-30 questions with an 80% pass mark", which does not match the current 15-question, 9-correct format used at Kerala RTOs; they claim the blood alcohol limit for drivers is 0.00%, when the legal limit under the Motor Vehicles Act is 30 mg per 100 ml; and several say the learner's licence is issued for one year, when it is valid for six months. The current test format and fee are below, verified against the sources listed.
Steps: from application to the test
- Apply first. On parivahan.gov.in, open Driving Licence Related Services, select Kerala, and choose Apply for Learner Licence. Fill Form 2 (your details and vehicle class) and Form 1 (fitness self-declaration), upload documents, and pay Rs.150 per class plus the Rs.50 test fee. The full walkthrough is on our learner's licence service page.
- Book your slot. In Kerala the learner's licence test is normally taken at the RTO, on a computer at the office. Slot availability varies by RTO; the test is conducted at your KL-coded RTO (find yours via the RTO office list).
- Pick your language at the start. The test screen offers Malayalam, English and Hindi. Choose before the first question.
- Answer 15 questions. You have 30 seconds each. Questions with road-sign images are common; the sign families above cover most of them.
- Get at least 9 right. On passing, the learner's licence is issued and you can download it from the portal.
- Wait 30 days. You can apply for the permanent driving licence 30 days after the learner's licence is issued. Read what the Kerala driving test involves before you book.
Online or RTO visit? The application and payment are online on parivahan.gov.in; the computerised test itself is taken at the RTO in Kerala. A test-from-home mode exists in some states, but I could not confirm it is offered in Kerala, so plan for the RTO visit.
Documents checklist for the test day
- Age proof: birth certificate, Class 10 marksheet, passport, PAN card, or Aadhaar showing date of birth
- Address proof: Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, or a utility bill in your name
- Recent passport-size photographs and a scanned signature
- Form 1 self-declaration of physical fitness; Form 1A medical certificate if you are above 40 or applying for a transport class
- The application number and the slot confirmation from parivahan.gov.in
FAQs
Can I take the Kerala learner's licence test in Malayalam?
Yes. The test offers Malayalam, English and Hindi, and you pick at the start of the test. Several Kerala-specific practice apps also offer full Malayalam question banks for practice.
How many questions are there, and what is the pass mark?
The standard format is 15 multiple-choice questions with at least 9 correct answers, at 30 seconds per question. One site claims a newer 12-correct pattern from August 2025, but I could not verify it on parivahan.gov.in; the portal tells you the current pattern when you book.
What happens if I fail the test?
You can reappear after 7 days by paying only the Rs.50 test fee again. Most people clear it on the first attempt after an hour or two of mock tests on the Sarathi portal.
Can I take the learner's licence test from home in Kerala?
Not confirmed. Some states allow an Aadhaar-verified online test from home, but I could not verify that Kerala MVD offers this; plan to take the computer test at your RTO.
How long is the learner's licence valid?
Six months. You must hold it for at least 30 days before applying for the permanent driving licence, and clear the driving test within the six-month window.
What does it cost in total for a bike and a car together?
Rs.150 licence issue plus Rs.50 test fee per class, so Rs.400 for two classes (before any state add-ons). Driving schools may quote more for assisted service; treat anything above the official fee as a service charge and ask for an itemised quote.
Fees and rules change without notice. Verify all fees and rules on parivahan.gov.in before applying.
