How to check vehicle registration details online in Kerala

Last updated: October 2026

You can check a Kerala vehicle registration online in a few minutes on the Vahan portal on parivahan.gov.in, using the Know Your Vehicle Details service. Enter the registration number exactly as on the number plate, complete the captcha, and the portal shows the record held in the national Vahan database: registering RTO, registration date, vehicle class, maker and model, fuel type, RC status, and validity dates for fitness, insurance, PUC and tax. The owner name is shown only in partly masked form, and the full address, full chassis number and full engine number are not shown in the public lookup. There is no separate Kerala-only lookup for this: a KL vehicle is checked on the same national Vahan database as any other Indian vehicle.

What you can and cannot see in the public lookup

The lookup is designed for verification, not for finding private owner information, so personal fields are masked or hidden on purpose.

DetailShown in public lookup
Registration number and registration dateYes
Registering authority (RTO name and code)Yes
Maker, model, vehicle class and fuel typeYes
RC status, for example activeYes
Fitness, insurance, PUC and tax validityYes, as dates or status where recorded
Financier or hypothecation entryShown where recorded on the RC
Owner namePartly masked only
Owner addressNo
Full chassis and engine numbersNo, not in the public result

Do not pay a third party app for the basic lookup: the sources checked for this post describe the basic Know Your Vehicle Details check as free. One gap, stated plainly: parivahan.gov.in and mvd.kerala.gov.in were unreachable from here at research time in October 2026, so no live official fee screen could be read directly.

Method 1: Vahan Know Your Vehicle Details on Parivahan

This is the main method, and the one to use first.

  1. Open parivahan.gov.in in your browser.
  2. Open Informational Services and choose Know Your Vehicle Details. On some layouts the same service is also reached through Online Services, then Vehicle Related Services.
  3. Log in if the portal asks you to. New users create an account with a mobile number and verify it with the OTP sent to that number.
  4. Type the registration number without spaces or hyphens, for example KL07AB1234.
  5. Enter the captcha exactly as shown and click Vahan Search or Search Vehicle, depending on the label on screen.
  6. Read the result: masked owner name, registration date, RTO, class, fuel type, RC status, and fitness, insurance, PUC and tax validity.
  7. Save a screenshot or note the dates if you need them for a purchase check or an insurance renewal.

Menu labels change from time to time. Follow the label closest to Know Your Vehicle Details and stay on parivahan.gov.in.

Method 2: check an application or RC status through Vahan vehicle services

Know Your Vehicle Details is for a vehicle whose RC has already been issued. If you have recently applied for a new registration, a transfer, or a duplicate RC and you are waiting for the outcome, use the application status route instead.

  1. On parivahan.gov.in, open Online Services, then Vehicle Related Services.
  2. Select Kerala as the state.
  3. Enter the registration number, select the RTO where the vehicle is registered, and proceed.
  4. Open the status or information services menu and choose Know Your Application Status.
  5. Enter the application number from your acknowledgement, or the registration number where that option is offered, complete the captcha, and submit.

A new application will not appear as a finished record until it is approved. If you are mid-transfer, our guide to RC transfer fees and timelines in Kerala explains what happens between application and the new RC.

Method 3: NextGen mParivahan for your own vehicle

For your own vehicle, the official NextGen mParivahan app lets you store a virtual RC on your dashboard and open it again without searching each time.

  1. Install the official NextGen mParivahan app and sign in with your mobile number and OTP.
  2. Search in the RC section using the vehicle registration number to see the basic record.
  3. To create the virtual RC, choose the add to dashboard option and enter the last five digits of the chassis number and the last five digits of the engine number from your physical RC.
  4. Verify, then open the saved RC from your dashboard whenever you need it.

That last five digits step is the ownership check, which is why the app asks for numbers the public lookup does not display. A virtual RC in the app can be shown during a traffic check. A newly issued RC appears only after the issuing authority releases it, so a very recent registration may need a short wait. You can also keep a digital RC in DigiLocker.

How to use the result when buying a used vehicle in Kerala

Run the lookup before you pay any advance, and compare every field against the seller documents and the vehicle itself.

The lookup does not prove a vehicle is accident free, and it does not replace a physical inspection or matching the stamped chassis and engine numbers against the RC in person.

FAQs

Is checking vehicle registration details online free?

The basic Know Your Vehicle Details check is described as free in the sources checked for this post. No live official fee screen could be read at research time because parivahan.gov.in was unreachable from here, so treat any payment demand on a third party site with caution and return to the official portal.

Can I find the full owner name and address from a number plate?

No. The public lookup masks the owner name in part and does not show the owner address, or the full chassis and engine numbers. That masking is deliberate, to protect owner privacy and prevent misuse.

Can I check a vehicle from another state the same way?

Yes. Vahan is a national database, so the same Know Your Vehicle Details service works for vehicles registered outside Kerala. This post focuses on KL vehicles, but the steps do not change by state for the basic lookup.

What is the difference between Know Your Vehicle Details and Know Your Application Status?

The first shows the registration record of a vehicle whose RC has been issued. The second tracks an application you have already filed, such as a transfer or duplicate RC, using its application number.

The details on Vahan do not match my RC. What should I do?

Do not rely on the wrong field for a sale, insurance claim or transfer. Apply for the correction through Vahan vehicle services for your RTO, or visit that RTO with the RC and supporting documents, and wait for the corrected record to reflect before completing the transaction.

What could not be verified for this post: parivahan.gov.in, vahan.parivahan.gov.in and mvd.kerala.gov.in were unreachable at research time in October 2026, so the steps above describe the documented portal flow from the sources read, and menu labels may differ slightly on the live portal. Fees and rules change without notice. Verify all fees and details on parivahan.gov.in before acting.
